Bob Lutz, the fighter jet flying, cigar chomping, ZR1 Corvette driving Car Guy spent the last two nights with Charlie Rose talking up his new book and blasting US business school centric bean counting management styles. As his out of the box thinking is still woven within the conventional fabric of the auto industry, I was very surprised to see Elon Musk, Silicon Valley Titan, Rocketeer and battery operated car guy sitting next him as Charlie Rose dissected their relationship. One can only wonder what Lutz thinks of Tesla’s 2012 projected run of 5,000 vehicles in total. For anyone from Detroit, 5,000 vehicles is a rounding error on a rounding error. As almost an after thought, Lutz answered Charlie Rose’s question on renewable fuels with a 20-30 year integration period . Then Lutz asked why Germany powered its entire WWII Wermacht with coal to synthetic petrol plants and The US with all its coal can’t? While to him it was a thought exercise, for anyone involved in renewable energy, it’s a core question. For me one thing is clear, the traditional industrialists won’t stand a change unless they are willing to allie with emerging companies and their technologies. www.charlierose.com/view/interview/11984

While choosing to read little else other than Page 6 over the holiday weekend, I did read an obituary that had caught my attention, Tom West, a Data General team leader tasked with commercializing one of the 1st trunk sized laptops. At the time, now forgotten names like Data General and Digital Equipment were on the cutting edge of everything. While huge mainframe computers were the rule, West led the commercialization of mini mainframes and ultimately, trunk sized laptops with a full screen. It is truly doubtful that if he waited for the perfect mix of technology and user interface that he would ever have launched any of these products1.0. Naturally, without these product launches, DG and DEC would never have been the highflyers that they were for most of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Today, as everyone looks and waits for the perfect solution and decries anything less, a successful outcome can be one that lets a team or business compete in the next round, cycle, or 2.0 and beyond.

Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority
As global commodities markets swooned and Congress wavered in its support of renewable energy subsidies, regional and local level projects continue to develop on their own path. It was announced this week after several years of effort, The Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority will double the amount of municipal solid waste that can be converted into electricity. This strategy reduces the amount of waste that needs to be land filled while potentially creating green MegaWatts for close to 30,000 homes. What’s important is that the county had an extensive recycling focused strategy enabling this natural progression to increased energy output. One can debate the technology or project level elements. It is clear that a strategy focused on on an ultra low emission focused waste to energy strategy is one that can and should embraced nationwide.

http://www.bloomberg.com/video/68568538/ Yesterday, there was a great interview on Bloomberg TV from a CEO I had never heard of. As the boss of IDT, Howard Jonas, focuses on shale oil, and cloud based solutions for the on-demand video storage that the cable companies increasingly rely on. How he cobbled together these businesses, I have no idea. As for Shale as the solution or the problem, the lobbyists from all sides have their flip books . ready with the answers for anyone who cares to endure their presentation. Mr. Jonas made some pointed comments on multi-nationals in particular how Exxon made such a mess of their shale oil development activities in the late 1970s that they exited the business in the early 1980s determining that it will never be viable ever.
